Main activities and tasks:
· Provide 2nd line operational support for the Packet Core network (2G/3G PS Core, 4G EPC, and 5G SA), ensuring high availability and performance.
· Manage the lifecycle of Packet Core-related Incidents, Problems, and Changes, coordinating with vendors, field teams, and stakeholders.
· Perform configuration and maintenance of Packet Core nodes (e.g., SGSN, GGSN, MME, S-GW/P-GW, and cloud-native 5G SA NFs such as SMF and UPF).
· Participate in network upgrades for all Packet Core products.
· Monitor Packet Core stability and performance alarms; investigate performance degradations, troubleshoot anomalies, and restore service.
· Assist in Change Management activities such as planning, executing, and validating configuration changes, software updates, and parameter adjustments.
· Conduct acceptance testing and validation of new equipment, features, and site upgrades prior to production rollout.
· Provide remote technical support to field engineers during installation, migration, and troubleshooting activities.
· Contribute to knowledge sharing and documentation regarding operational procedures, troubleshooting guides, and lessons learned.
· Deliver managed services during standard business hours and participate in on-call rotations, acting as technical authority for Packet Core-related escalations.
· Support continuous improvement initiatives within operations, focusing on network resilience, automation, and efficiency.
ROLE SPECIFICATION
The Back Office Packet Core Engineer is a highly skilled professional responsible for the 2nd line operational support and maintenance of the Packet Core Network.
The role focuses on ensuring high availability, performance, and stability of Packet Core services through effective Incident, Problem, and Change Management.
Required Education & Trainings:
· Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications, Networking, or IT Engineering (or equivalent experience).
Required Experience:
· Background in Incident, Problem, and Change Management in an operations/NOC setting.
· Experience in remote or site operations (integration, acceptance, commissioning, testing, maintenance, and support) of Packet Core nodes.
· Familiarity with network monitoring and troubleshooting tools.
· Experience working with multi-vendor telecom networks is desirable, with a strong focus on Ericsson equipment.
Specific skills & technical knowledge:
· Very good knowledge of 2G/3G PS Core, 4G EPC, and 5G SA Packet Core architectures, network topologies, and standards (3GPP).
· Extensive experience with Ericsson Packet Core products: SGSN-MME, GGSN/P-GW, EPG, and cloud-native 5G SA NFs (SMF, UPF) deployed on Ericsson Cloud Infrastructure (NFVI/CaaS).
· Knowledge of and ability to troubleshoot Packet Core protocols (GTP-C/U, Diameter, RADIUS, S1-MME/S11/S5/S6a, HTTP/2 SBI) and investigate alarms.
· Knowledge of setting, collecting, and interpreting Packet Core signalling traces and protocol captures (e.g., using Wireshark, Ericsson AMOS/OSS, or equivalent tooling).
· Ability to troubleshoot performance degradation issues.
· Knowledge of data networking technologies, transport architectures, and network topologies.
· Knowledge of UNIX or LINUX operating systems.
· Scripting skills (Bash, Python, Perl) and familiarity with cloud-native tooling (Kubernetes/kubectl, Helm, Docker) for managing containerised Packet Core NFs.
· Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
· Excellent communication and documentation abilities.
